Mayoral donation towards school garden
Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Cllr Steve Beasant offered to donate £250 to Pilgrim Academy following his visit to the Academy in March on World Book Day.
The money was donated to the school to purchase some new plants and flowers for the class planters.
Mister Mayor visited the children this morning during their Early Years and Key Stage One Special Mentions Assembly where he explained why he chose Pilgrim Academy for the grant and how important community spirit is.
Cllr Steve Beasant said: “It is great to see you all this morning and I am very happy to be able to present you all with this cheque to go towards your garden. Last time I was here, I was particularly impressed with your outdoor learning and wildlife projects.
It’s very important that we look after the environment and doing this through gardening, attracting bees and butterflies and growing lots more trees will make a big difference.”
Over the Easter holidays, SMSC Lead, Mel Portlock and Vice Principal, Kayleigh Morley visited Grimsby Garden Centre to buy the plants.
The staff at the centre, run by NAViGO, were extremely helpful in choosing what plants would be best for our garden and we were able to purchase at least six plants for each class planter.
The pupils at Pilgrim Academy have now started to get their gardening gloves on and decorate their planters, ready for the Pilgrim Patch Garden Party to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III next month.
Mel said: “The children take great pride in making the school look amazing. They all work very hard and this is a great opportunity for them to develop new skills with gardening.
I’d like to thank Mister Mayor for his kind donation that will make such a different to our garden.”
Executive Principal, Andrew Clark said: “I would like to thank Mister Mayor for the donation towards our outdoor learning areas. The children have loved putting all of the new plants and flowers in and they were so pleased to have received the generous donation.”
